the short of it:
My name is Eugene Hawkin and I am a seasoned executive, entrepreneur, and investor with multiple successful exits who advises and coaches early stage companies. I manage a portfolio of early stage startup and alternative asset investments. I enjoy building businesses and mentoring entrepreneurs. I am always looking for the next great project to get involved in. I am totally not an alien.
The longer story:
I co-founded my first company in 1999 while still in high school. We took about $1,000 in initial investment and grew it into a $50M+ revenue business with 7 offices around the world. In 2006, Inc. Magazine ranked us one of the 100 fastest growing privately held companies in America. It was the best MBA money couldn’t buy, and I attribute much of our success to simply not knowing any better. After selling that company, I founded two more companies in the Financial Services and Financial Technology spaces and completed two more successful exits.
As much as I’ve learned in my time in finance and fintech, I also learned that it wasn’t for me. It was a wild ride and a great education.
I love the early stages of a business when the mad rush of risk, stress, problem solving, and innovation slowly coalesces into something bigger. Piece by piece it comes together: a plan, a team, a strategy, becoming a real business that, as uncouth as it may be to say in some circles these days, makes real profits. I love mentoring entrepreneurs and helping them navigate the challenges of an early stage startup as they grow an idea into something so much bigger; hopefully helping them save themselves some blood, sweat, tears, and money by learning from my successes and, probably even more importantly, my mistakes.
Today I manage a diverse investment portfolio including real estate, early stage startup investments, and alternative assets. I spend my time managing our portfolio, making investments, helping early stage companies, and incubating new ideas. I am always looking for a interesting investment opportunities, but even more so, ready for the next exciting project to get involved in full time.
My criteria for taking on new projects are:
I have to be building the future.
I have to be waking up every morning excited to solve a puzzle or a problem.
I have to be working with a great team of intelligent, competent, funny and compassionate human beings who don’t take themselves too seriously. (We all spend a lot of our time working, and the quality of your life is highly dependent on the quality of the people you work with. Surround yourself with the best people.)
Some things I am good at:
Attention to Detail
I love to geek out about space, artificial intelligence, education, good governance, sexual equality, sexuality, human relationships and global poverty alleviation strategies. I also enjoy occasionally buying and selling companies, investing in real estate and small to medium sized businesses, as well as rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, diving, summiting mountains and kayaking into the sunset.
Rumor has it that I occasionally officiate a mean Catholic/Jewish/Buddhist wedding here and there.
